Jordan are gearing up for their fifth AFC Asian Cup, and their fourth in a row, which will be held in Qatar from January 12-February 10.
In the latest in our series of special reports highlighting the Kingdom’s involvement, we look at the UAE 2019 finals held in 2019.
It was Jordan’s fourth appearance in the AFC Asian Cup finals which was the tournament’s 17th edition, hosted by the United Arab Emirates from January 5-February 1, 2019.
The edition witnessed an increase in the number of teams from 16-24.
Qualification Journey
The national team qualified by finishing second in its group in the joint qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
Jordan secured direct qualification after reaching the third round of the World Cup qualifiers.
They earned 16 points in the group stage, with five wins, one draw, and two defeats in a group that included Australia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Bangladesh.
Winning the Group
In the AFC Asian Cup 2019 draw, Jordan found itself in Group B alongside Australia, Syria, and Palestine.
Jordan opened with a crucial victory against the defending champions, Australia, 1-0, with a goal from Anas Bani Yaseen.
Continuing their impressive performance, Jordan won their second match against Syria 2-0, courtesy of goals from Musa Al-Tamari and Tariq Khattab.
In the last group stage match, the national team drew 0-0 with Palestine, securing their place in the next round as group leaders for the first time in their Asian Cup history.
Unexpected Upset
The outstanding performance in the group stage fuelled optimism among Jordanian fans for a good run at the tournament.
However, the journey came to a shattering end in the Round of 16 against Vietnam, who qualified as the third-placed team in their group, securing the spot ahead of Lebanon based on fair play.
Jordan took the lead with a goal from Baha Abdel-Rahman in the 39th minute, but Vietnam equalised in the 51st minute of the second half. The score remained 1-1 through extra time, leading to a penalty shootout where Vietnam emerged victorious, ending Jordan's quest for the quarter-finals.
