Ishaish into Olympic Boxing quarter-finals
Jul 31, 2024
Ziad Ishaish is one win away from securing Jordan’s first ever Olympic boxing medal after a tremendous victory in the Arena Paris Nord.
The 25-year-old, who beat the reigning World Champion in the last round, defeated Japan’s 2021 World Champion, Sewon Okazawa, in the last 16 of the -71kg weight to qualify for Saturday’s quarter-finals.
It was a brutal fight, with Ishaish winning with a 3-2 split decision on the judges’ scorecards.
Victory would guarantee at least a bronze medal, but the experienced Ishaish will be taking nothing for granted against the winner of Britain’s Lewis Richardson/Serbia’s Vahid Abasov.
Ishaish’s victory made up for the defeats suffered by his brother Hussein Ishaish and teammate Obadah Al Kesbeh who both exited at the last 16 stage despite valiant performances.
