Boxer Ziad Ishaish gave one of the performances of his life to beat reigning World Champion Aslanbek Shymbergenov to advance to the last 16 at the Paris Olympic Games.
Ishaish, 25, competing at his second successive Olympics, needed to be at his best to beat the Kazakh 30-year-old, and he won with a split decision on the judges’ scorecard.
Next up for him in the welterweight 71kg class is a bout against Japan’s Sewon Okazawa, who won the world title in 2021.
The win at the Arena Paris Nord continued Jordan’s strong start to the boxing comeptitions after teammate Obadah Al Kesbeh won his opening bout on Saturday to also reach the last 16.
