Jan 08, 2024
Jordan are gearing up for their fifth AFC Asian Cup, and their fourth in a row, which will be held in Qatar from January 12-February 10.
In the latest in our series of special reports highlighting the Kingdom’s involvement, we look at the Australia 2015 edition.
The Qualification Journey
For the second consecutive time, Jordan qualified for the AFC Asian Cup, making it the third time in their history after the 2004 and 2011 editions.
The 2015 edition took place in Australia for the first time and Jordan qualified by finishing second in the qualifying group which included Oman, Syria, and Singapore.
The team accumulated a total of 12 points from three victories against Singapore (4-0 and 3-1) and Syria (2-1 away) and draws against Syria (1-1 at home) and Oman (goalless draws in both home and away matches).
Early Exit
Drawn into Group D in the AFC Asian Cup 2015 alongside Japan, Iraq, and Palestine, the national team faced Iraq in its opening match and suffered a 1-0 defeat, marking the team's first-ever loss in the group stage of the AFC Asian Cup.
In the second match, Jordan bounced back with a stunning 5-1 victory over Palestine at the Melbourne Stadium, watched by 11,000 spectators. Hamza Al-Dardour shone, scoring four goals and becoming only the second Arab player in AFC Asian Cup history to score four goals (a super hat-trick) after Bahrain’s Ismaeel Abdullatif and the fourth player overall.
However, in the third match, the national team suffered another loss, this time against Japan, 2-0. This result led to an early exit from the competition.
