Jan 06, 2024
As the national football team prepares for its fifth participation in the AFC Asian Cup, hosted by Qatar from January 12 to February 10, we present a series of special reports on Jordan's previous participations in the AFC Asian Cup.
2011 Edition and the Qualification Journey
After making their Asian debut in 2004 but then missing the 2007 edition, the national team successfully qualified for the 15th edition held in Qatar from January 7 to January 29, 2011.
Jordan secured their qualification for the second time by finishing second in Group 5 of the qualifiers. The group included Iran, Thailand, and Singapore with Iran topping the group with 13 points, and Jordan second with eight. Thailand and Singapore collected six points each.
During these qualifiers, Jordan beat Iran (1-0) and Singapore (2-1), drew twice against Thailand (0-0), lost to Iran (0-1), and suffered a defeat against Singapore (1-2).
Advancing Past the Group Stage
In the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, Jordan started well by drawing against Japan 1-1, with Japan scoring in injury time.
In the second match, Baha’ Abdel-Rahman scored a remarkable goal against Saudi Arabia, securing a significant victory for Jordan against the previous edition's runner-up and three-time Asian champions.
In the crucial match for qualification, Jordan defeated Syria 2-1, securing a place in the quarter-finals by finishing second in the group with seven points, tied with Japan but with a lower goal difference.
Quarterfinal Exit Against Uzbekistan
In the quarter-finals, Jordan faced Uzbekistan, the winners of Group A at the Khalifa Stadium.
Uzbekistan’s Ulugbek Bakaev scored in the 47th minute, adding a second goal two minutes later.
Baha’ Bani Yaseen narrowed the gap for Jordan with a goal in the 58th minute. However, this goal was not enough, and Jordan exited the AFC Asian Cup at the quarter-final stage for the second time in their history.
