Afaif Gaith has become the second Jordanian to qualify for the bronze medal match at the Karate World Championships taking place in Budapest, Hungary.
Gaith followed teammate Mohammad Al-Ja'fari (-84kg) in reaching a third-placed fight-off, with both gunning to become Jordan’s first medal winner in the history of the event.
Gaith will be going for -67kg bronze against Kazakhstan’s Amirali Dedar.
His run to the medal match started with a round-of-64 win over Jordi Carpentier, 5-0, and then victory over The Czech Republic’s Kristof Rosa, with a score of 7-4.
In the round-of-16, Gaith lost to reigning Olympic and World champion Steven Da Costa, from France, but moved to the bronze medal group courtesy of his opponent reaching the final.
Victories over fighters from Tunisia and Chinese Taipei followed to ensure he booked a place for Saturday’s bronze medal match.
Meanwhile, Hassan Masarwah was eliminated from the -75kg category early on, and Abdullah Hammad lost in the -60kg early rounds.
Noor Nasser went out of the women’s -61kg event in the round-of-64, following a tiebreaking defeat of 9-9 to Japan’s Maya Suzuki.
