Jordan’s hosting of the World U20 Wrestling Championship has further strengthened the Kingdom’s reputation as a global sporting hub, Engineer Mohammed Al-Awamleh, President of the Jordanian Wrestling Federation, has claimed.
The event taking place at Princess Sumaya Hall in Al Hussein Youth City has attracted 1,200 athletes from 63 countries, and Al-Awamleh believes it has turned the eyes of the sporting world on Amman.
In a statement to the Jordan Olympic Committee’s website, Al-Awamleh stated: “We are immensely proud of the positive reaction from the International Federation, represented by its President Mr. Nenad Lalovic, and the participating teams regarding the organisational success so far from three days of this tournament.
“Everyone here is pleased with Jordan, particularly the participants, which is reassuring considering we just had 21 days to put the event on.
“So, we extend our gratitude and appreciation to all of the institutions that supported us in organising the event, as they have all played a significant role in the exceptional presentation of the championship so far.”
Al-Awamleh highlighted that the tournament will make a lasting impact on Jordan, particularly for the local wrestlers who have the opportunity to come up against and meet some of the best in the world for their ages.
He also highlighted the economic gains from so many people travelling into the Kingdom, and the exposure that the event is providing Jordan worldwide. But not only does this highlight the benefits that sport has in boosting tourism, he added that the federation will also benefit directly from investment as a result of hosting.
