SILVER, BRONZE FOR JORDAN AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
May 30, 2023
Juliana Al-Sadeq and Mahmoud Al-Taraira have put Jordan on the podium at the WT World Taekwondo Championships held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Al Sadeq, ranked this week as the world’s No 1 in the -67kg class, beat Morocco’s Sofia 2-0 in the opening round, before beating Chile’s Claudia Gallardo (2-0) in the round of 16.
Next up was China’s Zhang, who she also beat 2-0 before overcoming Norwegian fighter, Marie Nielsen, 2-0, in the semi-finals.
But her luck ran out in the final when she lost the gold medal match to France’s Magda Viet-Henin, 2-1, to settle for silver.
Her teammate, Al-Taraira, started his run in the -58kg competition with a win against Mali’s Youssef Simbara, 2-0, and then overcame Greece’s Unisios, Ivory Coast’s Issa Diakite, and then a quarter-final win over world number three and Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Vito Del Aquila, of Italy. His run ended in the semi-final against Russia’s Georgy Gurtsev, 2-0, to settle for bronze.
The medals move Jordan up to a total of nine from the history of the championships, including three silver and six bronze medals.
