TAEKWONDO SILVERS AT ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Jun 24, 2022
Jordan continues to impress on the international Taekwondo stage after winning a pair of silver medals at the 25th Asian Taekwondo Championships in Chuncheon, South Korean.
Zaid Mustafa and Louay Humaidan were the toast of Jordan after superb performances saw them reach the finals of the -68kg and -54kg categories respectively.
Mustafa launched his campaign with a win over Thailand’s Tabsin Naripang before defeating Tajik fighter ‘Shumakhmadov’ in the quarter-finals.
His run to the final continued with a win over China’s Shen Ming, but he missed out on gold after defeat to Uzbekistan’s world number two and reigning Olympic champion, Ulugbek Rashitov.
Mustafa’s silver was one better than the bronze he won in Beirut last year at the same event.
Teammate, Humaidan, surged to his final with wins over Sebastian Tan (Malaysia), Dasinbek (Kazakhstan) and Shaha Khan (Pakistan), but was beaten to the gold medal by home favourite Park Tae-joon.
Meanwhile, Yara Yassin lost at the quarter-final stage in the women’s -57kg competition against Iranian Zahra Shaidai, after winning her first match against Kuwait’s Dar Al-Awadi.
The national team will conclude its participation at the Asian Championships on Sunday, when Zaid Al-Halawani (-63kg), Saleh Al Sharbati (-80 kg) and Juliana Al-Sadeq (-67kg) will participate.
