OLYMPIC STAR JOINS JORDAN TEAM FOR WORLD KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Jordan’s Olympic medallist Abdul Rahman Al-Masatafa will join Team Jordan’s participation at the Karate World Championships taking place in Dubai, UAE, from November 16-21.
The Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist is in the teams competition and will be joined in Dubai by Afif Ghaith (-60kg), Abdullah Hammad (-67kg), Hassan Maarweh (-75kg), Mazen Al Jaidi (-84kg), Mahmoud Al Sajan (84kg), Wjoud Al Drous (-61kg) and Huda Jabr (-68kg) as well as Ahmed Shedid and Zaki Abu Qaoud, who join Al-Masatafa in the teams event.
Mohamed Ibrahim, Technical Manager, stressed that training has gone well and the fighters are ready to make an impact when they travel out today (Sunday).
The squad has a blend of youth and experience with some making their first appearance at a senior world championship.
A hand injury has ruled Al-Masatfa out of the individual event, but the medical team believes he can possibly play a part in the teams event with a decision to be made on the day of competition.
Al-Masatafa won bronze medal in the -67kg competition in Tokyo, an event that welcomed Karate for for its Olympic debut.
He finished fifth at the last edition held in Spain 2018, coming close to winning Jordan’s first bronze there.
His focus though remains on getting fit for the Asian Championships taking place in Kazakhstan in December.
This week’s event is expected to welcome over 1,000 players from 117 countries.
