HARRY DANCES HIS WAY INTO QUARTER-FINALS OF OLYMPIC BOXING QUALIFIERS
Mar 05, 2020
Australia’s Harry Garside has revealed his training secret after reaching the quarter-finals of the Asian/Oceanian Road to Tokyo 2020 Boxing qualifying event in Amman.
The 63kg second seed looked light on his feet as he earned a split decision over Youth Olympic gold medallist, Atichai Phoemsap, and he credits ballet for giving him the winning edge.
“I know it seems like going from one extreme to another, but it has really helped me a lot with my technique, particularly my speed and power in my legs,” said Garside, the Commonwealth Games champion who decided to give ballet a go last year after hearing his idol, two-time Olympic champion Vasyl Lomachenko, used the dance to improve his footwork and balance.
He next meets Elnur Abduraimov in the last eight on Monday morning, after the Uzbek beat The Philippines’ James Palicte.
Also in the 63kg division, world bronze medallist, Manish Kaushik, of India, and Mongolia’s third seed, Chinzorig Baatarsukh, booked their quarter-final spots.
There was a shock in the 75kg class with third seed Jancen Poutoa losing to Uzbekistan’s Fanat Kakhramonov. But there was no such trouble for the second seed, Seyedshahin Mousavi, of Iran, who recorded a unanimous points decision over Japan’s Yuito Moriwaki.
China’s Tanglatihan Touheta Erbieke produced the punch of the tournament so far to knock out Thailand’s Weerapon Jongjoho in the second round and book his passage through to the quarter-finals along with Kazakhstan’s Abikhan Amankul, who beat Korea’s Jinjea Kim.
There was a big shock too in the light heavyweight 81kg competition with second seed and world silver medallist, Dilshod Ruzmetov, beaten by Australia’s Paulo Aokuso. He will next fight Vietnam’s Cuong Nguyen who beat Mongolia’s Shinebayar Narmandakh.
Kyrgyzstan’s third seed, Erkin Adylbek Uulu, was also beaten, losing to China’s Daxaing Chen who will now fight India’s Sachin Kumar in Sunday morning’s quarter-final.

Jordan’s boxing brothers Hussein and Zeyad Ishaish will both be in action on Friday late on in the morning session.
