Jul 19, 2019
HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, President of the Jordan Olympic Committee and Member of the Executive Office of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was joined by the President of the World Taekwondo Federation, Dr. Chung Won Choue on a visit to the Azraq Taekwondo Academy in the town’s refugee camp.
The Academy was launched by the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation in cooperation with the Jordan Taekwondo Federation and Jordan Olympic Committee back in 2016.
HRH Prince Feisal was also representing International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, with Dr. Chung Won Choue also in Jordan for the Asian Taekwondo Championships taking place in Amman this week.
The pair were also joined by International Wrestling Federation Development Director, Dika Nyamki, to witness a Wrestling exhibition alongside a thrilling Taekwondo performance put on by the Academy’s fighters.
The World Taekwondo Federation has invested considerable resources into the Academy in a bid to develop a team capable of competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
It has been used as a pilot project which can be developed to other trouble spots in the world where there are large numbers of displaced people.
It is hoped that through cooperation agreements with International Federations, more sports will be offered to refugees through the Academy including table tennis, judo, hockey, badminton and wrestling.
