OLYMPIAN FANOUS GOING FOR ASIAN GLORY
Jul 21, 2017
Olympian Lawrence Fanous will be looking to clinch a major title when he competes at the ASTC Asian Triathlon Championships in Palembang, Indonesia this weekend.
Fanous has picked up a couple of British race wins prior to travelling to south east Asia where he is joined by Kraeem Othman who will compete in the Juniors category.
Both will be coached by Abdulaziz Al Shu’aibi. “They have worked hard to prepare for this event because the Asian standard is always improving," Al Shu’aibi said.
Othman, 18, is one of 55 triathletes from 17 countries in his category and a top 10 finish would secure a place in the World Juniors Championships later this year in Holland.
But all eyes will be on Fanous who is keen to add the Asian crown to his Arab title won last year.
“I'm feeling very confident for the Asian Championships here in Indonesia," he said.
"The team came here early to acclimatise to the hot and very humid conditions and inshallah it will pay off for us.
I am already feeling more comfortable in the heat and my preparations have been going well.
"This venue is the same site as the Asian Games next year, where my goal is to win a medal for Jordan.
So, this race is great practice for that and I hope to take a medal here also. I will be content with top-5 but I am trying really hard to be on the podium here in Palembang.”
The 32-year-old is in a field of 35 elite athletes from 15 countries.
All competitors are expected to go through three disciplines of Swimming (1,500m), Cycling (40km) and Running (10km).
