Jordan’s swimming sensation Khader Baqlah has won his second gold medal at the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The 18-year-old followed up his 400m freestyle gold by winning the 200m in a time of 1:49.85 minutes, almost half-a-second ahead of Turkey’s Erge Gezmis on 1:50.31 mins with another Turkish swimmer, Doga Celik in third in 1:50.44 mins.
The University of Florida student, who was top seed for the 200m, can still win more glory with the 100m freestyle, 400m individual medley and the relay still to come.
His teammate Mohammad Jaber finished 10th in 2:02:81.
And there was more glory for Jordan on Day Two, with Halah Traish winning karate bronze in the 68kg weight.
Traish beat Pakistan’s Kulsoom Kulsoom 8-0, having earlier lost a chance to reach the final against Turkey’s Eda Eltemur.
The two medals are added to the two golds won on Day One.
In Judo, Olympian Ibrahim Khalaf missed out on -90kg bronze to Turkey’s Batuhan Efemgil after earlier defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Azat Shakirove.
In boxing, Ziad Ishaish lost his first round bout to Turkey’s Onder Sipal in the 69kg category, while Olympian Ihab Darweesh narrowly lost to Syria’s Ala’eldein Ghadoun in the 90kg class.
Olympic +91kg quarterfinalist Hussein Ishaish launch his Baku campaign against Iran’s Reda Mordakhani, while Mohammad Al Wadi will meet Kazakhistan’s Mirbek Sherov in the quarter-finals of the 56kg.
In tennis, Jordan beat the host nation 3-0 as Seif Adas (6-0,6-1) and Musa Kuttub (6-1,6-3) eased past their singles opponents and then won the doubles rubber 6-1,6-2.
But Jordan didn’t make it to the semis due their earlier Group B defeats to Pakistan and Qatar.
